Looking for cheap farm land to purchase in North Carolina or California?

We need a minimum of at least 5 acres, but we're looking to spend no more than $500 an acre. I've been searching on many sites, but everything is completely over priced. We're starting a homestead that will be fully self sustainable. The parcel needs to have very little yearly property tax. If you have suggestions on other east or west coast lands I'm willing to look into it as long as its in warm weather.
